2017 is a huge year for Sound City – we’re pulling out all the stops to make sure that our 10th birthday is a completely immersive, total experience. We wanted to do something really special, not just to mark the occasion, but also to reward all those loyal Sound Citizens who have come with us on this amazing 10-year journey. We’re also thrilled to be working with our brothers and sisters from Bido Lito! once again, bringing you all you need to know about Sound City 2017 in this special, one-off Dockland Pink magazine.
Sound City has come so far since we started in 2008: the festival has changed immeasurably over the past ten years, and so has our city – always on the up. From the amazing parties in and around the Ropewalks part of the city, we have grown into our new home on the docklands, where the River Mersey – our gateway to the world – is in full view. Moving the festival site to Clarence Dock, just adjacent to our home of the past two years at Bramley-Moore Dock, allows us to make some improvements to your enjoyment of the festival, while still featuring the backdrop of the famous Liverpool skyline and the stunning views across the river. We’re tremendously proud of what we’ve achieved over the last decade and what Sound City has become, and I don’t hesitate for a moment to say this is going to be our biggest and best event to date. Don’t miss out, it’s going to be incredible.
As ever, our focus is on the zeitgeist. Our aim is to inspire and breathe new desire into the next generation who will shape the 21st-century music business, working with our new partners in Korea, China and right across the globe. We are bringing our acclaimed Sound City+ conference to the very heart of Liverpool’s creative quarter this year as we take over Camp and Furnace and Constellations. The Baltic Triangle is synonymous with everything innovative and cutting edge that is coming out of Liverpool right now, making it part of the vibrant, forward-thinking fabric of the city. Sound City is the conduit to drive these connections, as we celebrate those mavericks who have played a pivotal part in some of the milestones in the development of the rock ‘n’ roll business.
The term ‘legend’ is overused these days but we do have bona fide music legends on the bill. We’re overjoyed to welcome our old friend John Cale back to Sound City for the only European performance of the landmark The Velvet Underground & Nico album. He has put together a stunning line-up to perform this, and will also be In Conversation on the festival site over the weekend. This is one of our additional special events on top of the festival which, alongside an opening-night show with The Human League and Art Of Noise, will make for a really special 10th anniversary celebration.
Supporting, nurturing and promoting new talent is what we’re all about – it’s in Sound City’s DNA. Our renowned Apply to Play programme has been a cornerstone of the festival since the very beginning and we’re proud of the acts that have come through, from Grimes to Ed Sheeran – which just goes to show how important a springboard Sound City can be for emerging artists. The fact that we have 200 acts from over 25 different countries at the festival this year – and that we have received thousands of applications from acts representing even more nations – is testament to the reputation of Sound City and of Liverpool as a global hub of fresh talent.
There is nowhere quite like Liverpool: it is the main reason why bands, delegates and music lovers return here year after year to share the Sound City experience. This city has always been an inspiration and a hotbed of new music and we’re proud to keep that torch held high, showing our city off in the best possible light to the thousands who are coming in from all around the world. This is something that should be embraced and nurtured.
Whether this is your first time or you are returning for more, have an amazing Sound City. Fall in love: with the music, with the city and with the people during our 10th anniversary spectacular. We look forward to seeing you on the dancefloor.
