Joy Division – Transmission

Factory

When we were writing the record, it couldn’t escape us that the world is in some ways very similar to how it was in the 80s. We have a Conservative government hammering the country, there’s this feeling of displacement and division thrown up by Brexit, Trump’s victory, and, of course, the rise of populism in Europe. We unconsciously started writing tunes that reflected that we’d started looking backwards for inspiration. Joy Division and New Order were the ones that really resonated with us. Transmission is a belter and sums up the feeling of release you get from music in dark times. Richard O’Flynn

Nina Simone – Feelings (Live At Montreux, 1976)

Eagle Records

While we were writing the album our friend Stephen (who’s also Metronomy’s manager) kindly let us set up and jam at this punky warehouse he runs. One night the three of us had an intense drink/music session and watched loads of classic live performances. This stuck out as devastatingly beautiful, it crushed us emotionally. That night we had an epiphany and started writing different tunes. Luis Gustavo Santos

New Order – Temptation

Factory

I am probably quite late to the party but I only heard New Order for the first time about a year ago, and this track, in particular, blew me away. I absolutely fell for the bass lines –  they are very melodic and pumping – and the way they were played reminded me a bit of how I play, so I got (Peter) Hook(ed). Guro Gikling

Grace Jones – Private Life

Sire

When we were first talking about producers, before we started talking to Kwes, we were toying with the idea of asking Adrian Sherwood to get on board. We thought it could have been a great fit and nice nod to the past we were getting inspired by. That never materialised but it led us on to all the music he produced and from there back on to dub. We were always aware of Grace Jones of course but listening to this song really sparked inspiration in us. She’s artistic, bold, does her own thing and of course she’s an incredibly strong woman, much like our Guro! The world will always benefit from women such as that. ROF

Television – Marquee Moon

Elektra

Absolute classic. At just under 11 minutes it’s such a journey, killer riffs and groove, just epic all around. It’s been a template for the album and, also, for some other things we have to come. LGS

Talking Heads – Fela’s Riff

Sire

I love this whole record, it’s an absolute masterpiece, it’s so groovy and melodic. I picked this tune because I really like the intensity and the constant guitar. Gotta love a bit of loopy guitar. GG

U2 – I Will Follow

Columbia

A long time ago U2 were not the rock behemoths we know today. They played a direct, euphoric version of post-punk that we love. They inspired us to just go for it and step up the energy when we wrote and played. I Will Follow is one of their lesser known tunes but an absolute belter. ROF

Patrice Rushen – Haven’t You Heard

Elektra

A late-night disco, boogie classic that is a favourite amongst our DJ friends at the Crow’s Nest. The Nest is a small hut at Glastonbury where we played two of our most favourite shows. You just have the best time of your life in there, and we consciously took that energy into the studio. LGS

Arcade Fire – Wake Up

Rough Trade

Since the release of their first record, Arcade Fire have always been one of my favourite bands, and I guess this tune was my introduction to them. My friend’s older brother played it to me and said: that’s energy! He was absolutely right, and I have been chasing that energy ever since. GG
