The cool cats of RADIO EXOTICA continue on their tour, introducing us to some of their favourite sounds from around the world. This month we stop off in South-East Europe to check out the vivacious sounds of klezmer and Balkan gypsy music.
Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. Developing mostly in Romania, the music has flourished around the world, most notably in the US, where Jewish immigrants began fusing it with ragtime, blues and jazz.
This mix focuses on ‘modern’ klezmer – a hybrid of traditional Yiddish folk, Romani Gypsy music, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and a heavy dose of dub and hip hop. Featured artists include: THE SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS, DUNKLEBUNT, AMSTERDAM KLEZMER BAND, FANFARE CIOCARLIA, PUERTO CANDELARIA, BALKAN BEAT BOX and MUNICIPALE BALCANICA.
