If, like us, you’re still adjusting to post-normal life, you’ll be glad of this blast of familiarity. We’re continuing to brighten up your weekends by delivering a slice of Africa Oyé direct to your ears, in partnership with Melodic Distraction Radio. For the past three months we’ve had the pleasure of hosting an exclusive weekly live mix for you, a dose of that trademark Oyé vibe. We’ll continue to bring you these mixes over the coming weeks, as there’s nothing that says summer in Liverpool like an Oyé-soundtracked afternoon in the park. Recorded live at Africa Oyé, each mix is part of a series of DJ sessions from the Trenchtown and Freetown stages, where the sounds of Afro-centric music are pumped out non-stop to keep the groove riding high in Sefton Park.

Our latest mix, the 15th in this series, is from ONE A PENNY, and is a stone cold Oyé classic. One A Penny is an old L8 soundsystem, arguably one of the city’s oldest, and is now under the stewardship of the next generation: Little Billy and Lieutenant. Their Sunday afternoon Trenchtown set, from 2018, is a great advert for why they’re a longstanding fixture of Oyé. It’s bass-heavy but varied, featuring lots of reggae, dub, roots and some lovers rock and ska.

Imagine you’re stood in Sefton Park right now, with the sun beating down on you, and that famous Oyé vibe all around. Turn this mix up nice and high and you’ll practically be able to feel it.
