The veena is perhaps one of the most beautiful instruments of India, yet is very seldom heard in the UK.  Hari Sivanesan, a young musicians born and brought up in Britain, took on the veena and made it his own.  After revealing a keen musical sense at a young age, and receiving guidance from his guru Smt. Sivasakthi Sivanesan, Hari’s incredible talent quickly led him on to an international stage, working with musical legends such as Pandit Ravi Shankar.  In this special concert, BBC award winner Hari Sivanesan and Mridangam player Pirashanna Thevaraja take listeners on an incredible and uplifting journey exploring the rich musical traditions of Sri Lanka and South India.

The musical journey through South India continues with the incredible talents of Dr. Deepti Omchery Bhalla. Unlike the Hindustani vocal tradition which is largely based on improvisation, the South Indian Carnatic vocal tradition is more structured in its approach and is generally centered around a repertoire of compositions.  Dr. Deepti Omchery Bhalla, a highly acclaimed performer and scholar of Carnatic music, presents a stunning and much-loved collection of South Indian compositions.  Deepti is an artist of exceptional talent, as she is equally accomplished in Carnatic vocal and the Mohiniattam form of dance, which she’ll also present later in the festival.
