THE OWL ENSEMBLE.....
...is a seven-piece comprising a string quartet with a jazz trio, blending layers of rhythmic patterns and soaring melodies, described as inventive and subverting classical traditions.
Olivia Moore is the band leader and inspiration behind the Owl Ensemble. She is not only a classically trained violinist, but is well established as an improviser drawing influence from Indian music and Jazz. Since taking part in the Serious Take Five artist development scheme in 2010, she has become in
creasingly busy playing at festivals such as the Brecon Jazz Festival and the London Jazz Festival.
The Owl Ensemble was formed in 2008 when Olivia and the drummer Myke Wilson found inspiration in each other’s approach and they held their premier at Manchester Jazz Festival. They reformed the band again in 2011 when the string quartet performed in Paul Heaton’s ‘The 8th’ at the Manchester International Festival. They also had two sell out gigs last year at the Contact theatre, Manchester and at the Marsden Jazz Festival. When their new album ‘Owl’ was first played on radio (Jazz FM) last summer, a review that followed hailed Olivia as a “true innovator... there’s an enormous sense that this album is going to go a long way to filling those nooks and cranny’s in your musical psyche which keep you feeling that you’ve not heard that that ‘perfect sound’ yet.” The British Jazz Blog.
Their album was also recently played on Jazz line-up (Radio 3) by Julian Joseph. Here’s what he said: “Olivia combines a string quartet with a basic jazz band. You’ve got the trio; piano, bass and drums;
sometimes you have the guitar; you’ve got two violins, viola and cello and I believe she combines these elements really effectively and very musically. It’s certainly not the first of its kind, but it’s a strong, solid, musical conception........On their liner notes they are going for interesting and eclectic; I would say ‘job done’. “
A review in the Manchester Evening News declared “Theirs is music of great clarity and space.........Sweet rather than severe, The Owl Ensemble transcend from the tasteful to the sublime”. Mike Butler
