A long weekend in the city's only indoor park
All things Scandanavian seem to be en vogue right now, and quite rightly so. Gravlax, pine trees, IKEA, gothic pop music, the diacritic ring and unfeasibly gorgeous blonde women; Scandanavia's gifts to the world are too many to mention. And now they have given us something else - PÅRK, which is happening this weekend at Liverpool's Camp & Furnace. For three days, the Camp & Furnace will be transformed into a Scandi-inspired indoor park, the only place in Liverpool (perhaps the world) where guaranteed sunshine will collide with an entire forest of hot tubs, cocktails courtesy of Santa Chupito's, legendary Swedish game 'kubb', and wiff waff, the game brought to popularity by the very Scandanavian-looking Boris Johnson.
Scandanavian culture aside, PÅRK's biggest draw might be the brilliantly drawn-together programme of imaginative electronic music, curated by Deep Hedonia, Liverpool Music Week, Detourjam, and Mellowtone. Saturday night sees the mysterious producer Holy Other appear in the Blade Factory with his intimidating brand of dark electronic textures. The rest of the bill is almost more impressive; Vessel will be proving why Tri-Angle Records hold him in such high esteem by dropping his unhinged, eccentric take on house and techno, and up-and-coming London producer Fort Romeau completes the evening by displaying why he left his day job playing keys for La Roux to pursue his intricate, groove-driven productions. The whole evening will set you back just £8 which is indecently good value for money, with tickets still available online from our Ticket Shop.
Sunday provides another chance for you to while away your bank holiday weekend in Scandanavian style as Deep Hedonia and LMW again curate another knockout blow of out-there electronica in The Furnace, beginning at 3pm. Heading the bill will be both the schizophrenic rhythms of Jam City and the ambient soundscapes of patten, but it's further down the bill that the Liverpool connection becomes clear. Sun Drums & Deep Hedonia members will be unveiling their Acrobat project which looks to step into the unexplored world of improvised house music, whilst Liverpool's extraterrestrial electronica specialist Afternaut returns to the live scene with his enveloping journeys through sound and hypnotic visuals. Not to be outdone, Tom Cowcher of Sun Drums will also be initiating a new project by the name of Beluga. The full line up can be found here, and it's worth mentioning that entry is yours for the princely sum of nothing. 0 pence.
Another 12 hours of escapism are being served up on Monday, as Camp & Furnace and Mellowtone put together a bill of chilled acoustic, funk, soul, jazz, blues, hip-hop and reggae all designed to keep you living the Scandanavian dream right into the last hours of the bank holiday, with entrance once again being completely free. The event runs from mid-day to mid-night and will see performances from Clean Cut Kid and Sparkwood & 21, amongst many others, full details of which you can find here.
PÅRK takes place at Camp & Furnace over the weekend of 25th, 26th and 27th August. Details of the whole programme of events can be found on the PÅRK event page here.
Tickets for Saturday night's Holy Other show can be bought here.
