Are you ready for a more psyched world? If so, Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia has just announced a raft of seventeen new acts guaranteed to warp your unsuspecting mind, challenge the boundaries of music, and maybe even make you question the very nature of your existence.
One of the esteemed fourteen is Mancunian shoegaze outfit MILK MAID, who have just released the raw, acid-stained new album Mostly No. Having been pursued relentlessly by the NME in their formative years as the next band which the magazine could declare had 'saved' guitar music, Milk Maid quietly got on with crafting their melody layered indie to great acclaim. As many reviews of the new album have proved, the band are quickly emerging as one of the nation's most exciting, fully formed guitar bands.
Kraut inspired psych magicians HOOKWORMS are another new addition to the festival. They've rightfully started to gain a reputation for their spiralling fog of out-there sounds so spacious that you could fit Matt Bellamy's ego in there, twice. Recent stints on tour with both The Men and Wooden Shjips have lent the band great experience, and they manage to combine the ferocity of the former and the disorientation of the latter in their transportative tracks. Get your ears around inspired recent release Form And Function and be convinced.
PALMA VIOLETS will be well known to the good, law-abiding people of Liverpool after they made quite a first impression on the city after their debut gig with both a superlative performance and an incident involving the helter skelter in the city centre, illegal trespassing, and being arrested. Hopefully, on 29th September they will be ascending to heights of a different kind as they return to the city with both their freedom and their dishevelled, disorientating songs intact. Having been signed to Rough Trade Records already, the hype has quickly reached quite a ridiculous scale, and their appearance at Psych Fest will be a rare chance to see if the hyperbole is justified.
Rosco, the new project of ex-Spacemen 3 member Sterling Roswell, is one of the many other additions to the line-up, as he brings his hazy, psych-edged pop to the festival. Also appearing will be The Cult Of Dom Keller, Black Market Karma, The Altered Hours, Factory Star, Lola Colt, Dark Bells, Ancient River, The See See, Drenge, and Helicon.
Considering the current vibrancy of Liverpool's music scene, it's unsurprising that another clutch of Liverpool bands have been added to the bill, including Bido Lito! August cover star Edgar Summertyme, psych pioneers Mind Mountain and scrappy garage heroes The Wild Eyes, all of whom join the previously announced Mugstar and Baltic Fleet to represent the city.
The new acts join headliners Dead Skeletons, Wolf People, and The Time And Space Machine who we had the pleasure of interviewing earlier this summer; you can read the fruits of that chat here.
DJs including Clinic, Nick Power of The Coral, Will Sergeant, Sonic Cathedral, Akoustik Anarkhy and Kool Aid Bob of Probe Records will be manning the 1's and 2's to throw down some mind melting jams both between bands and long into the night.
The Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia takes place on Saturday 29th September at Camp & Furnace. Tickets are priced at £20, and can be bought exclusively from bidolito.co.uk HERE.
