The Viper Label Playlist

Vipers in the Palm House

Few record labels can claim to have documented and soundtracked the recent sounds of Liverpool quite like THE VIPER LABEL. From 'unearthed' Liverpool classics and live albums, to showcasing some of the city's contemporary talent, The Viper Label has become a seal of approval for the type music that has placed Liverpool where it is today. Arthur Lee's sojourn with Shack, Captain Beehfheart reissues, The Stairs' follow-ups to Weed Bus, and early La's recordings all sit comfortably alongside each other in a body of work that has brought Viper to worldwide renown.

This mix was prepared for us by one of the head Vipers, Mike Badger, ahead of Mellowtone's An Evening Of Music With Artists From The Viper Label at The Palm House, Sefton Park, on Thursday 23rd May. Featuring Edgar Summertyme, TG Elias, Chris Elliot - tickets for this event can be purchased HERE.

The Hokum Clones, Tramp Attack, The Great Northwestern Hoboes and Aviator all feature on the playlist, alongside the three artists playing on the night.

CMWMSMDM Guest Mix

Sound City warm-up from CMWMSMDM

CantMixWontMixShdntMixDontMix are well known across the North West, supporting world class DJs such as Norman Jay, Mr Scruff, 2ManyDJs, and Craig Charles on the way to securing their recent gig, rocking Chibuku, Liverpool's biggest club night. The Mixnot massive also carry the title 'festival specialists' and in 2009 the Mixnots travelled to Malawi, Africa to play at the fantastic Lake of Stars festival and 2010 saw a third successive booking at both Standon Calling and Creamfields in what was another summer of festival smashing for the funkateers a la CMWMSMDM.

Here they give us their guest mix, Rifunkulous, as a taster for their now traditional night-closing set at Liverpool Sound City. They will be taking to the decks on Friday 3rd May at The Art Academy, starting from 2.15am running to 4 in the freakin' morning. Get your funk on.

Motion Guest Mix

Motion bring DENNEY to Fallout Factory

Underground, deep electronic house music is what MOTION specialise in, and their pasrt run of events are testament to this. Their next offering (29th March) sees them expand further down that road as they bring Denney (Hot Creations/20:20Vision) to the Fallout Factory for what will surely be another lockout event. Denney's productions have been causing dancefloor mayhem of late, which has seen him draw support from Laurent Garnier and Jamie Jones among others of late. Slots at Pete Tong's Wonderland, Manumission in Ibiza and MIKZ in Berlin show the high regard Denney is held in, with him regularly playing alongside some of the biggest names in underground house at his residency at Future.

This mix has been put together for us by Motion resident NoisyAudio, who will be playing at the 29th March event alongside Jimmy Allen (Waxxx/Discoteca Poca), Sam Power (mUmU/Shelter) and loads more. For more information on the event check the Facebook event HERE.

Mr Paul Guest Mix

Discoteca Poca HAUSwarming

Change is a good thing, right? In most instances yes, and this particular change of venue for DISCOTECA POCA seems to be one. Many people were dismayed when the promoters behind the successful club night announced that they were going to be relocating from their usual home of The Shipping Forecast's Hold after two years of highs and highers. But, onwards and upwards is their mantra, as they are set to take their new abode by storm on 22nd March when DP bring WAZE & ODYSSEY to new home HAUS. The duo are already being talked up about in the right circles, gaining some impressive recognition from Dusky after remixing TEED and Disclosure.

Discoteca Poca's resident DJ and co-promoter MR PAUL is one of the adherents to the "rolling stone gathers no moss" theory, and he has compiled this mix for us ahead of the event (which will see himself and fellow DP resident Jimmy Allen share the decks with Waze & Odyssey).

Waze & Odyssey play Discoteca Poca on Friday 22nd March at HAUS, Greenland Street. More event details including ticket information can be found HERE

Deep Hedonia Guest Mix

New mix ahead of Palmistry event

The folks behind DEEP HEDONIA have tapped in to a fine seam in Liverpool right now: since their inception last summer the live promotions collective have brought and showcased some of the finest electronically-inclined musicians about, and they show no signs of abating anytime soon. On 9th March they are teaming up with Brooklyn Mixer to bring PALMISTRY to BM's Hideout Bar for a free show. Palmistry is currently best known for producing Cantonese rapper Triad God, who took the experimental electronic scene by storm last year with NXB, however his two EPs I Swear and Cut showed that he could make solo music that rivalled his collaborator. Palmistry’s music sweats London, not felt before since the rise in UKG in the early 2000s, with melodramatic strings interwoven with two-step beats, breathy vocals and intimidating bass lines bubbling underneath.

For more information on this event see the full details on the event page - HERE

This mix was made by one of Deep Hedonia's own artists Kepla, as a representation of "the soundworld that we've been trying to bring to Liverpool since our launch last June. It features some of our past acts (Yola Fatoush, Lunar Modular, Laurel Halo, Bantam Lions) as well as some upcoming acts in Palmistry and NHK'Koyxen. Plus a bunch of tracks that have been on our radar recently. It was pretty hard to come up with this mix as our scope of electronic music isn't limited by genre, or BPM, so some have had to be collided in a pretty caustic/amateur way, but we hope you enjoy the mix anyway!" Enjoy away.

Kooky Guest Mix

Kooky's NXNW Warm Up Mix-Tape

As we look forward to the imminence of NORTH BY NORTH WEST Festival at Liverpool Olympia on Saturday 10th November, this exclusive mix from DJ KOOKY is proving perfect to get us in the mood. Taken from a warm-up set before THE TEA STREET BAND's appearance at The Kazimier in October (for Rural Disco with Wave Machines), the set features inspirational tunes that Kooky and the band have loved over the years that represent the band in one way or other, PLUS an exclusive remix of TTSB's Disco Lights at the end of the set.

North By North West will be taking over one of Liverpool's most distinctive venues next week for a day-long feast of live music, all from the minds of our city's most invigorating new artists. The Tea Street Band are headlining an event that sees THE SUNDOWNERS, BY THE SEA, THE LOUD and BROKEN MEN among the stellar supporting cast. Broken Men have just returned from a supporting tour with Echo & The Bunnymen in Rome, and The Sundowners' latest single Hummingbird had a great reception on their recent UK tour in support of Ren Harvieu. The Loud have been off our radars of late but have been busy in their rehearsal room working on a swathe of new material that will hopefully prove the basis of their set on Saturday. Meanwhile, By The Sea's trajectory has been in the opposite direction, as their debut self-titled LP release has seen them hailed far and wide as one of the country's most exciting new bands.

And as if that wasn't enough there'sn also THE HUMMINGBIRDS, COLD SHOULDER, THE RED SUNS, LUKE FENLON, DEAD DUKES and loads of other great local acts on the bill. Kooky will also be resuming his sonic fireworks on the decks at the event, alonside The Coral DJs and some special guests yet to be announced.

Get your tickets for this event now priced at just £10, unless you want to be the person left outside to marvel at Liverpool Olympia's marvellous exterior while all your mates are inside having a wail of a time. Nah, we thought you wouldn't want to.

Rich Furness Guest Mix

RICH FURNESS serves up a curveball

Chibuku and Abandon Silence resident disc spinner Rich Furness has thrown a bit of a curveball here, splicing Talking Heads, Burial and Aphex Twin in to this exclusive guest mix. Rich has been a resident on the decks at Chibuku nights for nearly six years now, and has become part of the furniture there over the years. As well as that he's been a regular face at the wildly popular Abandon Silence nights since they took over the Shipping Forecast's Hold just over two years ago, helping it build in to one of Liverpool's fastest-rising nights.

Catch Rich DJing at Chibuku's grand re-opening party on 6th October when they return to their spiritual home at The Masque. He'll also be in ation at Abandon Silence on Thursday 20th September, as well as popping up in a variety of random bars and clubs for one-off sets.

Let's. Get. It. On.

Renaissance 20th Anniversary

Opulent clubbing celebration in St George's Hall

Renaissance has played a central role in the history of the UK's dance music, emerging in the '90s alongside Cream and Ministry Of Sound to pioneer the evolution of the genre. The brand is now rightly receiving recognition for its influence with huge 20th Anniversary Celebrations across the country, and having already seen off Birmingham and Leeds, the next plotted event has been arranged with ambitious Liverpool promoters Freeze who have managed to secure the regal surroundings of St George's Hall on 15th September.

Headlining the event will be hirstute Argentinean DJ Hernan Cattaneo who has become something of a legend of house music following his releases on Renaissance Records, and is joined by tech-house veteran Danny Howells. Just below these two bona-fide innovators of dance music on the bill is rising Spanish star Henry Saiz, who has recently won DJ Mag's 'Best Compilation' Award and looks set to take up the baton of experimental dance music from Howells and Cattaneo. Promoters of dark, emotive electronic music Ghosting Season follow these guys up on the bill, and Liverpool and 3 Beat Record's own Jemmy completes what is a characteristically exciting line up in an unbelievable venue. Being the very generous DJ that Jemmy is, he has completed a slow-burning, contemplative 48-minute mix for us which you can stream above to get you in the mood for the night.

Tickets for Renaissance start at £15 and can be bought through many outlets from their Facebook page; but move quickly, because we're reliably informed that tickets for this unforgettable night are selling unbelievably fast.

CantMixWontMix - Jubilee Mix

Nevermind The Jubilee - Here's The Mixnots (Picnic Mix)

A special guest mix by CantMixWontMixShdntMixDontMix DJs, featuring some classic anti-establishment songs from The Sex Pistols, NWA and David Bowie. Ahead of Camp & Furnace’s ‘Never Mind The Jubilee Picnic’, an alternative indoor street party taking place on the 2nd June to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee, this is a royal affair you don't want to miss out on...also to be a bearer of good news, the un-Jubilee Picnic is completely free to attend, which means more money to spend on festive delights.

To mark this right royal occasion expect cucumber sandwiches, Molotov cupcakes, Monarch Jelly Heads and prepare for the unexpected. The guys at Camp & Furnace know how to throw a party, so look forward to a mocking performance from the 14-piece Balkan Gypsy combo The Destroyers, alongside local bands and not forgetting the boys from CantMixWontMixShdntMixDontMix providing a variety of beats that will have everyone causing general anarchy by the end of the night. But in the meantime, enjoy a pre-celebration of 60 years of the Queen's reign by listening to this mix.

Liam Greene Guest Mix

LOTS OF 175 - DJ LG's Common Ground Mix

"...Common Ground examines a sense of community and the evolution of this ‘sense’ in a world where influences, invited and uninvited, work to redefine it. This ‘sense’ is built as much upon experiences of difference as it is by place, language and lives in common..."

So is COMMON GROUND defined, a pioneering art exhibition taking place on 1st June at The Climbing Hangar, a venue in Birchall Street, L20, dedicated to the emerging rock-climbing sport of bouldering. This free event will feature work by three artists (Rachel Armstrong, Robert Lisney and Imogen Stidworthy), who are all engaged at different levels with activities at The Hangar and its emerging communities, and who had never met each other before working on this project. One of the exhibitions, Prefabricated (2004), is a photographic exhibit documenting a series of over 300 post-war prefab houses in Bristol, still standing and in use over fifty years after they were first erected.

Providing the soundtrack to the evening is DJ Liam T Greene, who has provided this Lots of 175 mix for us as a taster of what to expect at the event. If drum 'n' bass is your thing then DJ LG is your man, and this could be just the event for you: Liam's choice of tunes reflect the exciting and dynamic way that the space is used on a day to day basis as The Climbing Hangar.

For more information on the exhibition, or about the venue, visit The Climbing Hangar's website here.

Common Ground takes place at The Climbing Hangar on Friday 1st June. It is a free event, running from 6.30pm to 9.30pm

SAMIZDAT GUEST MIX

ANDREW ELLIS (Samizdat/Happy Endings) provides the first monthly guest Mix Tape to the Bido Stereo. As a promoter and DJ Ellis can often be seen - and heard - about the town spinning some eclectic mixes, and helping to put on a range of cutting edge gigs as part of Wingwalker Promotions.

Andrew recently worked with FOREST SWORDS to cut a one-off piece of music (Ground Rhythms) to transparent X-ray vinyl, as part of the Abandon Normal Devices festival. If you weren't there then unlucky: the record was only designed to be played once before the X-ray disintegrated, a truly unique performance.

In this month's mix, Andrew splices together FOUR TET's jazzy folktronica, the shimmering beats of DAUWD, and the apocalyptic tremor of ERIC SERRA. A stunning first Mix Tape to get your ears around.

MIND MOUNTAIN in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 16.
This month we have a full-on ear assault for you, with proggy psychdeleic trio Mind Mountain stepping in to the studio to perform an exclusive, and loud, live session for us.

It can be a hard task to find a balance between semi-improvised jams and digestible, accessible rock music, but it seems as though Mind Mountain don't even care about who they please. The triumverate of Marcg Glaysher (Bass), Joe Hirons (Guitar, Keys) and David Smyth (Drums) are intent on carving pulverising suites of noise, and you get the impression they only stop so the audience can draw breath. Shaking Elevator to its very foundations, they unleashed Void and Dune on us, both clocking in at over 7 minutes, but the enjoyment could have lasted much longer.

We invite Martin Smith, of jazz collective The Weave, in to the studio to discuss the relative merits and successes of the recent Liverpool International Jazz Festival, and his views on the trajectory of jazz in Liverpool over the past 20 years. We also have music from CLANG BOOM STEAM, CONAN, THE WEAVE and WE CAME OUT LIKE TIGERS, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

IAN SKELLY in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 15. This month's podcast sees us welcome multi-instrumentalist (and Coral drummer) IAN SKELLY in to the studio to perform an exclusive live session for us.

Far from sitting idle while the rest of the members of his band venture off and pursue their own projects, Ian Skelly has maintained his own high level of productivity producing and mixing at The Coral Cave studios in Hoylake. And then at the end of 2012 Ian released his own album Cut From A Star, a dreamy collection of tracks infused with the same sweeping psychedelia that imbues a lot of The Coral's best work. Working with a few trusted friends Ian set about crafting these tunes on his own, and the resulting record showed off Ian's own feverish songwriting abilities. I See You's shifting psych folk is timeless, and Nickel And A Dime is like reclining in an old leather armchair. More please Mr Skelly

We invite Yaw Owusu, the musical curator of the newly-formed Liverpool International Music Festival, in to the studio to discuss the reasons behind the new festival replacing the Mathew Street Festival and what we can expect from it in August. We also have music from NADINE CARINAJOHN HECKLEDEATH MASKSTHE THESPIANS and TONY BROKE, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

DEATH AT SEA in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 14. This month's podcast sees us welcome returning rockers DEATH AT SEA in to the studio to perform an exclusive live session for us.

It's been a whirlwind twelve months for the five lads from Death At Sea since they appeared on the front cover of our February 2012 issue, a year which has seen their stock rise rapidly while they've been out on the road honing their sound. Many people's tips for big things, Ruaidhri, Sam, Ralph, Neale and Carl and have just returned from a recording stint at Giant Wafer Studios with Owen Morris, with the promise of an EP of new songs to come in the next few months. We're treated to two of those new songs for this month's session: Floating Together is very much in the Death At Sea mould (with a certain Surfer Blood vibe), and Zachary is a slower more introspective lament. Bring on the new EP.

We invite Mike Stubbs from FACT in to the studio, to discuss the impact of Liverpool Vision's new SIF on grassroots organisations, and how you can have your say on it at our Culture Forum event. We also have music from WAVE MACHINES, OXYGEN THIEVES, BIRD, NINETAILS and BEACH SKULLS, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

WAVE MACHINES in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 13. This month's podcast sees us welcome returning four-piece WAVE MACHINES in to the studio to perform an exclusive live session for us.

Having been off our radar for over a year, and it being almost three years since we first heard the strains of their debut album Wave If You're Really There, Wave Machines are both old heads and fresh faces as they return with their second album Pollen (due to be released early next year). Upon first listen it's evident that the time away hasn't diminished any of their cutting edge and charm, and in fact they have built in even more complex song structures that veer from pop to disco in ever more inventive manners. We were delighted to have them in for this month's session, especially when they agreed to play the "two singles" from Pollen, I Hold Loneliness, and the dancefloor-friendly Ill Fit.

We invite Simon Howes from CALM and Lee Pennington from The Open Door Centre in to the studio, to discuss their various campaigns and bringing the discussion about depression and anxiety to the fore via the medium of music.  There is also music from EVA PETERSEN, THE FAMILY MONROE, NON, MONSIEUR, THE LOUD and THE CALEDONIA's Christmas single, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

CLINIC in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 12. This month's podcast marked the completion of our first year of sessions at our new home, so we thought we would invite some special guests in to help up celebrate it with a bang. It was with very little hesitation that we invited the mercurial CLINIC in to the studio to perform an exclusive live session for us.

There is something of an enigma about a band whose CV includes seven albums released on Domino Records, an appearance on the Letterman show and supporting Kings Of Leon on tour: this is heightened when the band in question, our dark Lords of chilling psych-punk Clinic, sound nothing like you'd ever imagine a band with that CV to sound. Liverpool's own masters of invention are as unbecoming as they are groundbreaking, and the release of their latest album Free Reign finds them still tinkering with the format that has served them well since I.P.C. Subeditors Dictate Our Youth thrust them in to the thinking muso's mind back in 1997. Now assimilating samples and beats from a drum machine in to their sonic pallette, we are treated to surely our best session so far at Elevator as the quartet rattle through the meandering Seamless Boogie Woogie, BBC 10pm (rpt) and King Kong. A sheer pleasure.

We invite Mick Everett of Witchfinder Records in for this month's discussion to talk about the role independent record labels still have in the digital age of music consumption. We also get Eighties Vinyl Records' Dave Hewitson on the phone to ask him why anyone would start up a vinyl only label in today's climate. There is also music from BY THE SEA, BROKEN MEN, THE SAND BAND,LOVED ONES and NON, MONSIEUR, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

BY THE SEA in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 11. This month's podcast features an exclusive live session with dreamsters BY THE SEA.

By The Sea are a name familiar to a lot of fans of new music in the city, and it is to our delight that their reputation is spreading far and wide beyond Liverpool now that they have pieced together their debut album. So before they go stratospheric we invited them in to Elevator Recording Studio to record an exclusive session for us, and their dreamy tones transported us to realm of gorgeousness. Recent single Eveline is joined by the forthcoming album's opening track By The Sea, and we hope you get as whsiked away by it as we were. We invite MelloMello's manager Laura Powers in for this month's discussion to discuss the situation MelloMello finds itself in currently, given Liverpool City Council's recent decision to remove its discretionary rate relief. We also have music from BARBEROS, GREG BAUGH from the In Response To project, WAVE MACHINES, MUGSTAR and TEAR TALK, plus our usual Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

BAD MEDS in session on our latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 10. This month's podcast features an exclusive live session with the hardcore punk trio BAD MEDS.

Bad Meds have barely been together a few months, and have only played one gig, yet it's already apparent that they're a force to be reckoned with. A trio dealing in a type of hardcore punk that's as visceral as it is tongue-in-cheek, Bad Meds' protagonists may already be familiar to Liverpool gig-goers: guitarist and vocalist Paul Rafferty cut his musical teeth with popular outfit Hot Club De Paris, while bassist Paul Thompson (Nowhere Fast) and drummer David Kelly (Vasco Da Gama) have been regular performers about town for a while too. For this month's session the lads cranked up the volume and rattled through two of their songs, Hoax Apocalypse and KLF cover It's Grim Up North, both permeated by some menacing bass tones. We also invite founder of the Liverpool Music Awards Ellie Phillips in to discuss the city's newest and most ambitious awards ceremony, what motivated her to found them, and the controversy around them. We also have music from ESCO WILLIAMS, AFTERNAUT, ALPHA MALE TEA PARTY, THE WILD EYES and DAN CROLL, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

LAURA J MARTIN in session on latest podcast

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 9. This month's podcast features an exclusive live session with the gorgeous LAURA J MARTIN. Liverpool’s flute-tootin finest brings a psychedelic feel to her music, looping vocals and instruments, fluttering effortlessly between flute, mandolin and xylophone. With a style similar to Björk and Kate Bush with influences of Wu Tang Clan, David Bowie and Serge Gainsbourg; Laura J Martin has been touring the UK and beyond since the release of her new album The Hangman Tree earlier this year on Static Caravan. With a hefty number of live shows on the agenda, make sure you try and catch a listen of the singer at one of her many festival appearances this year. We also discuss the current plight of our city's street performers and buskers under the new licensed scheme being implemented by Liverpool city council, with some expert input from guest host Tom George (Stool Pigeon, keepstreetslive.com). We also have music from EDGAR SUMMERTYME, ESCO WILLIAMS, VASCO DA GAMA, OUTFIT and DOMINOES, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

EDGAR SUMMERTYME in session on latest podcast

For this month's podcast, our eighth broadcast from Elevator Recording Studio, we are joined by the legendary EDGAR SUMMERTYME, who comes in to perform an exclusive live session for us.

The word legend is a dangerous one to use, and is one that should be used with extreme caution. In the case of Edgar Summertyme the term legend is entirely justified, and in many ways doesn't go far enough to describe the level of genius the man possesses. As a result we were overjoyed when Edgar, formerly of The Stairs, The Joneses, The Big Kids and Free Peace among others, agreed to come in to the studio to record this exclusive session for this month's podcast. Having been off our radar for a while due to illness, Edgar is back with a new record and a renewed vigour to get back out performing again. With his own particular mix of blues, jazz, soul and straight up rock'n roll, he will always be seen as one of Liverpool's true mavericks, and that distinctive voice is getting back to its full strength. The session version of What Are We Gonna Do is evidence of this, showing more of the usual gravelly tones we're used to, in stark contrast to the very restrained version on upcoming album Sense Of Harmony. The cover of David Bowie's Rock 'N Roll Suicide (with backing vocals supplied by Bido Assistant Editor Christopher Torpey!) is also testament to this, providing a rollicking finish to another stellar session.

This month we are joined by a guest host and regular Bido Lito! contributor Sam Garlick, of everisland Promotions, Tighten Up, Bombarda Collective and much more. We also invite Sam's promotions partner on everisland Clarry Mowforth to join us for a discussion based around the emerging wave of young promoters, and Liverpool's changing face of live music with the new and varied live venues that are springing up. We also have music from BALTIC FLEET, CIRCA WAVES, MUTO LEO, DOMINOES and JETHRO FOX, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

BEACH SKULLS in session on latest podcast

For this month's podcast, our seventh broadcast from Elevator Recording Studio, we are joined surf freakz BEACH SKULLS, who come in to perform an exclusive live session for us.

This duo play with a raw, infectious energy that manages to transport you back to the 1950s and the golden age of surf rock. If you close your eyes during Surf Freak and All Right Island you can almost imagine the waves lapping at your feet, while the ghosts of Dick Dale, Link Wray and The Tornados lurch through the breakers on their blackened surf boards...or something like that. Beach Skulls have released two limited edition cassette-only EPs thus far - Beneath The Waves and The Brooklyn Jive - on record label Cheesus Crust (based in Wrexham). Expect more to follow from these two, and engage your inner doom surfer.

With summer on the horizon we have a chat through what festivals we recommend to while away those balmy days and nights spent in random fields drinking cider. We also look back over what was another successful Liverpool Sound City, and discuss our own highlights, from performances to new venue spaces. There is music from BANG ONTHE TEA STREET BANDSUNSTACK JONES, FOREST SWORDS and CIRCA WAVES, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

Podcast #6

THE TEA STREET BAND in session on latest podcast

For this month's podcast, our sixth broadcast from Elevator Recording Studio and a bumper one at that, we are joined by the wizards of Balearic house THE TEA STREET BAND, who come in to perform an exclusive live session for us.

Fresh from releasing their double A-side single Fiesta/Summer Dreaming, the five-piece bring all the infectious energy from their mesmerising live sets in to the studio with them, and absolutely nail this session. Mixing some early '90s rave beats and gloriously shimmering guitars, The Tea Street Band manage to weave a warm glow of blissed-out Ibiza euphoria in to their tunes that are pure dance anthems. Even guitarist and lead vocalist Timo Tierney is moved to say that they "sounded like a giant clock." Quite.

With Liverpool Sound City 2012 very much on the horizon we invite festival director Dave Pichilingi in to the studio to talk about what to expect this year, and about the widespread appeal of it as an emerging urban festival. We're also joined for our discussion by Getintothis' Peter Guy, who comes in to chat about the inaugural GIT Award, which was won by Loved Ones. We also have music from DOGSHOW, BEACH SKULLS, MISS STYLIECONAN and LIZ GREEN, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

Podcast #5

THE WILD EYES in session on latest podcast.

For this month's podcast, our fifth broadcast from Elevator Recording Studio, we were joined by rock weirdos THE WILD EYES, who came in to perform an exclusive live session for us.

The three-piece garage rockers are about to release their debut single I Look Good On You on Holy Are You Recordings, which they were very kind to play for us in this session. Channelling the spirit of Iggy & The Stooges and MC-5, this will surely grab people's attentions when it comes out. Huw, Neale and Sam's other session song, Let's Ride, is a more Spacemen-3 type jam which shows just why we've been getting so hot under the collar about these fellas. Be sure to catch their launch party for the release of the single at Mello Mello on 12th May.

Ahead of this year's Record Store Day (21st April) we think about the varied buying habits of music consumers today as we canvas opinion in our discussion section. We also invite Caroline Smith and Priya Sharma from the Wolstenholme Creative Space in to chat to us about their plans for a Record and Zine Fair for Record Store Day, plus news of our own limited edition GAME THEORY compilation cassette. We also have music from KANKOURAN, ALL WE ARE, BANG ON, CLINIC and BY THE SEA, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...

Podcast #4

This month's podcast features an exclusive live session with the irrepressible force of nature that is MUGSTAR.

The Bido Lito! Podcast, in association with Elevator Recording Studio, Episode 4.

Jason, Pete, Neil and Steve have recently finished recording their fifth album, which will be due for release in October on the illustrious Agitated label (in the UK). The foursome have been busy since we last spoke to them (way back in Issue 1), taking in a tour of Spain - where they rubbed shoulders with Hawkwind - and releasing a slew of records. Split 7" singles with Carlton Melton and Oneida have followed alongside live dates with Wooden Shjips and White Hills.

Bringing their spacey and sometimes apocalyptic psychedelic sounds to Elevator, Mugstar showed why the late, great John Peel saw fit to invite them for what turned about to be the last Peel Session, as they delivered one of the best podcast sessions yet.

The varied platforms for unsigned bands to have their music recognised is also discussed, with the GIT Award, Merseyrail Unsigned, and Liverpool Sound City all recent examples offering recording and live rewards to local bands. We also have music from LAURA J MARTINEUGENE McGUINNESSFADED GOLDSOUND OF GUNS and PUZZLE, plus our Competition, Podcast Gig Guide and loads more...
